Oxidation Number/ Oxidation State

~> is an integer value assigned to each element in a compound or ion that allows us to keep track of elements associated with each other.

cations and anions have their own corresponding oxidation number

Oil = oxidation (anode) is losing electron;
         Increasing oxidation state.

Rig = reduction (cathode) is gaining electron;
         Decreasing of oxidation state.
